Happy Wednesday book friends! Have you heard of this book yet? This is a paranormal thriller about a group of teens who discover a box of old psychic predictions addressed to a Premonitions Bureau. The author was actually inspired to write this book by the discovery of a real Premonitions Bureau that used to exist from the late sixties to the early nineties researching psychic predictions. The book dives into what it looks like to tap into the power of the mind, as the main characters learn more about their world, and also themselves after discovering those predictions.

When Liv Hall and her friends find boxes of letters hidden in her grandfather’s attic, they discover hundreds of psychic predictions addressed to the Premonitions Bureau, a bureau to investigate psychic abilities that mysteriously closed in 1993. As the group reads decades-old premonitions, they stumble on letters from powerful psychics who mailed in their predictions and then disappeared.

A post online about the found predictions alerts a black ops group in charge of the military’s paranormal research, who will do anything to get their hands on the letters and the psychics who wrote them. Liv and her friends now know too much, and they’re directly in the crosshairs. To survive, they’re going to have to rely on each other and the unlikely help of psychics who thought they’d left the dangers of the Bureau behind forever.

The Time Collector is a book I knew nothing about, hadn’t even heard of it, but picked it up in a book store. It has an interesting premise (Roan, a psychometrist, is investigating the disappearance of his best friend Stuart, who can also read objects by touching them + a light romance with a psychometrist who has just discovered her talent and is in danger after inadvertently announcing her ability at Antiques Roadshow and the video goes viral), but tbh I was equally drawn to this book simply because I hadn’t heard of it + Yangsze Choo blurbed it. 2/3 of the way through and I’m not sorry about my decision!

Picked up from a discount store based on its premise -- which is that Roan can sense an object’s past by touching it, an ability known as psychometry. Psychometrists are rare, and when they start to go missing after investigating strange objects that are found wildly out of place, like a ring belonging to Descartes that was found in prehistoric stone, Roan realizes he and Melicent, a newly-discovered psychometrist, are in danger.

The synopsis on the back was interesting enough to make me grab it, but I was quite let down by this book. There was so little character depth to Roan or Melicent, despite the fact that we spend the entire book with them and watch them fall in love in a matter of days. The relationships that had more potential, like Melicent trying to connect with her teenage brother, whom she has been taking care of since the death of their mother, felt superficial.

The Time Collector is at its best when describing the vivid flashbacks that psychometrists receive upon touching objects, and I wish Womack had pressed a little harder on this concept. The most moving scene was a flashback to one character’s childhood experience with the horrors of the Korean War, and the subsequent understanding of how that shaped what she chose to do with her life. It was a little disappointing to see her left in the background of a less interesting cast of characters.

This book is a short, fast read -- I got through most of it in one sitting and finished it in less than a day, but it wasn’t the most satisfying.

Wszystko zaczyna się ponad dwa tysiące lat temu ... ale to potem.

W czasach teraźniejszych wszystko zaczyna się od śmierci znanego kolekcjonera starożytnych manuskryptów. Jego syn postanawia je sprzedać, a do ich wyceny zatrudnia profesjonalną badaczkę rękopisów, Semele. Kobieta zawsze marzyła, aby poznać słynną kolekcję zmarłego, więc nic dziwnego, że wyruszyła do jego posiadłości prawie natychmiast. Podczas spisywania wartości zabytków natrafia na pewien pamiętnik. Szybko jednak odkrywa, że osoba go pisząca nie spisywała swoich wspomnień, a zaglądała w przyszłość, bardzo daleką przyszłość. Potężny jasnowidz stworzył nie tylko księgę, ale i talię kart, która była przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie. Semele postanawia je odnaleźć i rozwiązać tajemnicę sprzed dwóch tysięcy lat! Niestety, ktoś próbuje odebrać jej pamiętnik, ale z pomocą przychodzi jej syn zmarłego kolekcjonera - arogancki milioner, Theo Bossard, który również skrywa tajemnicę.

Książka jest bardzo przyjemna, opisuje dzieje wszystkich pokoleń, dzierżących talię kart tarota, więc poznajemy naprawdę dużo historii. Romansu jest tutaj niewiele między głównymi bohaterami, ale nie jest powiedziane, że nie ma jej w ogóle. Akcja z rozdziału na rozdział się rozkręca, a także wyjaśniane są równe wątki.

Ta książka to jedna z moich ulubionych, uwielbiam takie klimaty z dreszczykiem i tajemnicami do rozwiązania, a tu ich nie zabraknie.
